President's Report

PRSA Philly – A Golden Year

By John F. Kouten, CEO, JFK Communications, Inc.

The Philadelphia Eagles won the Super Bowl!!!! Err, what I mean to say is that 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of the PepperPots—PRSA Philly’s coveted award for public relations excellence.

What a wonderful time for me to serve this chapter as its president. The city is still hungover from its improbable win over the New England Patriots, and the Villanova Wildcats won their second NCAA basketball title in three years. But, yet again, I digress.

50th Anniversary PepperPots – Don’t Miss It!

What I mean is that our chapter has never been stronger and we are poised to celebrate our Golden Anniversary PepperPot Awards on Wednesday, November 13, 2018. All are invited to compete. All are invited to attend. It’s going to be a great party!

So, What the Heck is a PepperPot?

For those uninitiated, PRSA Philly’s beloved PepperPot award was the brainchild of William Parker, APR, then a director of communications at Campbell’s Soup and the 1968 president of the fledgling PRSA Philly chapter. With additional creative support and energy from Frank X. Long, APR, Fellow PRSA (PRSA Philly president, 1970), the PepperPots were launched in 1968. According to another PRSA Philly pioneer, Anne Klein, APR, Fellow PRSA, “Bill suggested that PR is akin to PepperPot soup. Public relations throws in a little bit of everything for a winning recipe for communication success.” Anne was our PRSA Philly president in 1979.

By the way, PepperPot soup was a traditional Philadelphia dish dating as far back as the Revolutionary War and employed the combination of many leftovers, resulting in a scrumptious stew.

I am very excited about all the work being done by this passionate and dedicated chapter! And, based on the short time I have served, we achieved so much and will achieve even more before the year’s end. Thank you for this amazing opportunity to serve and I look forward to seeing you all as I continue my PRSA journey.
